Keeping in mind our forefathers vision of sharing ideas
and helping the retail baker be a better baker and manager, your
SRBA Board plans to have two or more hands-on workshops
a year. These workshops are informal and held in bakeries
so that we can have actual decorating and baking demonstrations. The
attendees can even feel the dough or try their hand at the
decorating. We have three hands-on workshops planned
Our
first was held in January at Tasty Pastry Bakery, in Tallahassee, Florida.
This is the family ran bakery of director Brenda O'Kelley. Now we
realize that it isn't easy to get to Tallahassee, but we felt that it was
worth the effort to see the operation that was started by Brenda's father
and a former SRBA director, the late Mitch Cross. A gift shop area
with gift baskets is a substantial part of the bakery's business, along
with their beautiful decorated cakes and yummy bakery products. Tasty
Pastry has even produced two Master Bakers: Debbie and Mark Cross.

The next
hands-on workshop was held in June, at Strossner's
Bakery, in Greenville, South Carolina. Strossner's was started over
60 years ago by the late German immigrant Richard Strossner, Sr. and his
wife Beatrice. Now it is run by Richard Jr., former SRBA
President, and Mary, his wife and SRBA Director. Strossner's offered attendees and
opportunity to see a bakery that has branched out to also be a restaurant,
caterer, and florist. At the workshop, Strossner's showcased their German heritage for the attendees by sharing some of the
products that are featured at their annual Oktoberfest
celebration. To see the pictures from this workshop go to the web

We also
have a workshop planned for this fall at Cinotti's Bakery & Sandwich
Shoppe, in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. The exact date and program have not been set at this time. So keep checking our website. |
